Insurance fraudsters could face up to 10 years in prison under new legislation published today by Justice Minister Michael McDowell. The proposed legislation will radically reform the law on personal injury claims by making it an offence to give false statements or to instruct a solicitor to deceive another party. Such offences would carry a maximum jail sentence of 10 years. The new legislation also provides for the establishment of a mediation body to settle compensation claims outside the courts.
