Govt facing €250m bill for personal injury claims


The Government is facing a bill of €250m in personal injury claims, according to the latest figures.

Three-thousand six hundred people are currently taking cases against the State.

72% of claims involve the prison service, the Gardaí and the Defence Forces.

The annual report of the National Treasury Management Agency shows that the State Claims Agency has already handed over €33m to settle personal injury claims.

40% of all claims have all been resolved, and almost a third of these didn’t cost the State a penny.

The State is facing potential costs of €250m, 60% of which is earmarked for claims of clinical negligence.

The remaining costs of €100m covers claims of employer liability, public liability and property damage.
